Madison Academy falls to Boaz in shootout
MADISON – Your honor, the defenses rest. The offenses, however, have something left to say.
What was seemingly a garden variety, season ending prep for the playoffs, fireworks went off in the second half Thursday night at Bill Washington Stadium.
Visiting Boaz won 46-42 in a game that was tied 1414 at halftime.
“Just gotta keep fighting,’’ Mustangs head coach Bob Godsey said in the aftermath.
When Charleston Owens pulled a fake handoff on fourth down from inside the 10-yard line before diving into the end zone it appeared the Mustangs had the game in hand The Pirates, however, had the same play in their book and from the 15, quarterback Beau Bennett went on an end around into the same corner of the end zone and might still be running unless the bus caught up to him on the way back to Marshall County.
Madison Academy (6-4) hosts Lee-Scott Academy (2-8) Friday night in the first round of the Private School Double-A playoffs this week. Class 5A Boaz (8-2) host Gardendale in the first round.
Owens swept around right end on a fourthdown carry to put the Mustangs out front in a frantic fourth quarter. As time wound down, Bennet threw a 75-yard catch-andrun to put Boax at the 15, and he did the rest with his own romp around right end.
Owens was intercepted in the final seconds in a desperation attempt.
He finished with 253 passing yards with two touchdowns on 12-of-18 accuracy and finished with 91 yards on 17 rushes with another two TDs. Jordyn McClain caught five passes for 94 yards while Tajh Phillips and Chas Hurt both hauled in a TD pass.
Bennett completed 23 of 38 passes for 360 yards and rushed five ties for 51 more.
Madison Academy trailed 14-7 at the end of the first quarter but broke from the halftime tie to lead 28-17 entering the fourth frame.
