Studio 106 moves to historic Clay House

Studio 106 now is open in historic Clay House at 16 Main St. in Madison.

Studio 106 stylists are Denise Swaney, seated, Sylina Cole, left, and Dana Burrows.

“Clients love coming here,” owner Dana Burrows said. “They say it feels like ‘Steel Magnolias,'” the movie centering around Truvy’s beauty shop.

For 11 years, Burrows worked at Perfections salon and then opened her own shop, Studio 106, at 106 Main St. in downtown Madison and worked there for 12 years. About two years ago, she relocated to 105-H Church St.

“I always wanted to be a hair stylist. As a kid, I did my dad’s hair while he watched football games on TV. He enjoyed it,” Burrows said laughingly.

At Studio 106, clients receive personal attention with haircuts, perms, hair waxing and coloring, along with makeup. Sylina Cole and Denise Swaney also are stylists. Donna Burrows, Dana’s sister, plans to join them to offer pedicures in February 2013.

Studio 106 offers various hair products, including Matrix, Redken, Shuga and Verran. Appointments are open to women, men and children.

To recover from summer’s sun damage, clients should consider deep conditioning. “A chemical modifier will help with sun damage. It closes cuticles down and takes away some of the frizz,” Dana Burrows said.

“Ombre coloring” is a popular style choice. “Ombre is for people who hate to ‘get roots done’ so often,” Burrows said. “It’s the new trend for 2013.”

Swaney and Burrows currently are serving as nail technicians at Studio 106. C&D shellac nails are a specialty.

How does Burrows know when she has had a good day at Studio 106? “When my feet are barking like dogs,” she said. “That’s a great day … when I’ve been very busy.”

Burrows and staff chose an eclectic decorating scheme for their rooms in Clay House. “We used a plethora of colors, different in every room,” she said. The former occupant was 16 Main Gallery artist community, which closed in August.

Clients can schedule appointments from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday and half-day on Saturday. Walk-ins also are welcome.

For the future, Burrows plans to offer massage therapy at Studio 106. For more information, call 256-464-0017 or visit Facebook/Dana Burrows.
