True’s artwork featured in ‘Heart of Athens’ calendar

Angela True’s interpretation of an Athens landmark is featured in the “Heart of Athens” calendar, a collection of familiar sites in Limestone County.

Art on the Square Art League invited True and 12 other artists to participate with the calendar project. “I was given a choice of three landmarks to paint. When I heard ‘Lake Ida,’ I instantly knew that was the building that I was to paint,” True said.

Actually, Lake Ida is a building … an old restaurant now used as a church and rented for other functions, like weddings and baby showers. “It’s a curved building that sits on Lake Ida and faces the roundabout at Lindsay Lane and Nick Davis Road,” True said.

Beautiful trees stand in back, hanging over the lake next to the back porch. “It’s most recognizable by its large, faded white-and-red lettered sign,” True said.

“Anytime one drives into Athens from Capshaw Road, they will pass Lake Ida and are drawn to look closer at that unique building that overlooks the pristine little lake,” art league president Diane Lehr said. “Angela captured that place and those feelings.”

Proceeds from calendar sales will benefit downtown revitalization in Athens.

“I am a painter, acrylics and oils,” True said. When painting in oils, she concentrates on traditional subjects, like barns, roosters and people. For acrylics, True chooses a contemporary or eclectic style. “My subject matter is often spiritual in nature.”

“Most recently, I love using spray paint,” True said.

Other calendar sites are Founders Hall; courthouse snow; St. Timothy’s Episcopal, First United Methodist and First Presbyterian churches; Newby’s Gulf and College Inn; U.G. White & LuVici’s; moonlight over the square; Kreme Delight; Hatfield Drive-In; Alabama Veterans Museum; Scout House; and Limestone Drug.

Calendar art is on sale through Dec. 17 at the Center for Lifelong Learning, 121 S. Marion Street St. on Courthouse Square in Athens.
