All sculptures for Madison placed on SPACES trail

All eight sculptures at Madison sites are in place for the SPACES Biennial Sculpture Trail.

The Arts Council (TAC) and Big Spring Partners in Huntsville originally collaborated to place the outdoor sculptures. Madison Arts Council worked diligently with TAC to bring the art pieces to Madison.

“Interest in a sculpture trail project for Madison began in the spring of 2011 with a group called Madison in Motion, which included representatives from Madison Arts Council, Madison Beautification and Tree Board, (the former) 16 Main Gallery and others” city councilman Tim Holcombe said.

At City Hall, “Prism Arc VII” by Carl Billingsley combines primary colors in an abstract that engenders thoughts of a network or infrastructure.

Three “Whisper Benches” by Jim Gallucci at Dublin Park provide practical seating in a whimsical twist with coiled pipe that allows two people to ‘whisper.’ At Dublin’s entrance, “Horizon Gate IV” by Gallucci is a curved sculpture featuring a center gate with interlocking branches, crowned by oak leaves.

“I use the format of gates and doors in my sculpture in order to give the public access to my art,” Gallucci said (jimgalluccisculptor.com).

Three pieces are on Main Street in downtown Madison. “Erratic Union” by Hoss Haley combines similar materials in contrasting shapes. The pieces are stacked in a manner that shows stability yet precariousness (hosshaley.com).

“The Owl & the Falcon” was created by Glenn Zweygardt. “Finding one’s place in a relationship with nature is the theme of my sculpture,” Zweyhardt said. “While working with materials such as metal and stone, a relationship between nature and myself is formed.” (glennzweygardt.com).

Mark Connelley designed “Drekar,” which translates as “dragon ship” from Norse. “This piece is an abstract version of a prow that was often featured on the infamous Viking vessels,” Connelley said (macworks-art.com).

Other sculptures stand at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Lowe Mill, Von Braun Center, Huntsville Museum of Art, courthouse square and Alabama A&M University.

All sculptures are for sale. Contact MAC at artsmadison.org.
