Voila! T-shirts transform to fashion scarves at library session

Old T-shirts will take on a new life as scarves at an upcoming class at Madison Public Library.

Madison Public Library will host its “T-Shirt to Scarf” class on Jan. 13 from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants can attend the class at no charge, and it’s open to anyone at least 18 years old.

“We offered this class last year and people seemed to enjoy it, so we thought we would offer it again this year,” adult services librarian Rachel Hooper said. “In the past, we have asked patrons what types of classes they would like. Several have said they enjoy the ones where they can recycle, or ‘upcycle,’ old items.”

“These scarves are perfect to wear during the colder months and can also make great gifts,” she said.

For the Jan. 13 class, participants can find a new use for old T-shirts. No arts-and-crafts skills are needed. Any skill level is welcome.

Participants should bring their own T-shirts, new or used. Extra-large (XL) shirts work the best for this project, but any size can be used.

“We have three options for participants to make. The easiest to make is a simple infinity-style scarf that is one big loop,” Hooper said. “The second option is also an infinity-style scarf, but it is made of several strands of T-shirts.”

A scarf with ruffles is the most involved choice. “It’s made of several strips of the T-shirt and then glued together,” she said. “Choose from the three different designs, or make one of each.”

Space is limited. For reservations, visit hmcpl.org/adultcrafts.

Madison Public Library’s address is 130 Plaza Blvd. For more information, call Hooper at 256-461-0046 or email rhooper@hmcpl.org.
