MADISON – Local residents can take advantage of free health screenings when the Big Green Bus visits the Madison Senior Center on March 27.

The Big Green Bus from Huntsville Hospital will be at the senior center from 9:30 a.m. to noon. This event is open to the public with no charge for the medical tests.

“The medical team on board the bus will perform various health screenings, such as blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks and body mass index,” Vickie Parker said. Parker works as interim director at Madison Senior Center.

The Big Green Bus is a mobile medical unit that the Huntsville Hospital Foundation purchased. The medical professionals on board offer screenings for cholesterol, glucose, height/weight screenings and other important readings.

On the bus, Tommy Murphy serves as a greeter, and two nurses who are on staff at Huntsville Hospital actually perform the screenings. “Tommy helps persons aboard the bus,” Parker said. “The bus has a lift so it is wheelchair accessible for handicapped persons.”

Individuals either walk into or are lifted onto the bus’ interior for the screenings. The hospital staff does not complete screenings in the center.

Members at Madison Senior Center appreciate help that the Big Green Bus provides. “I like the idea of having the screenings done routinely on the Big Green Bus because it keeps me aware of my health between visits to my doctor,” senior center member Lucille Miller said.

Member Anna Gay says that she likes the convenience of the services provided on the bus. “I am at the senior center on a daily basis,” Gay said.

Screenings are not limited to senior citizens. Individuals of any age can come by the senior center for the health screenings.

Madison Senior Center’s address is 1282 Hughes Road. For more information, call Parker at 256-772-6242.
