MADISON – Six teams from four Madison campuses are collaborating to raise funds to compete at Destination Imagination (DI) Global Finals at the University of Tennessee.

In upcoming weeks, these students will conduct multiple fundraisers to travel to Knoxville on May 22-26. “We invite the community to support these students’ efforts,” Robin Dauma said. She coaches DI teams at Discovery middle and Bob Jones high schools.

Teams from Madison elementary and Liberty middle schools with coaches Kazemia Reed and Leslie Hughes, respectively, also are working hard to build travel money.

At the global finals, teams will compete in one of seven, open-ended challenges that require the youth to apply science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), in addition to improvisation, theater arts, writing, project management, communication, innovation, teamwork and community service.

These teams won state champion honors at the University of Alabama in Huntsville on April 6.

Their first fundraiser was a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on April 20.

On April 27, they will hold a rummage sale, bake sale and berry plant sale from 7 a.m. to noon at the Bob Jones cafeteria. Blackberry and blueberry plants are premium, Southern-grown, thornless varieties. To guarantee availability, email to rdauma@madisoncity.k12.al.us by April 24. Residents can donate all types of items from 4 to 7 p.m. on April 26 in the cafeteria. Tax-donation letters will be available.

Also on April 27, DI teams will have a car wash on donation basis in the Bob Jones front parking lot from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

An ongoing fundraiser to collect electronics recycling for cell phones, used ink cartridges and laptop computers will be held through May 10. Collection boxes are in the lobbies at Bob Jones and Discovery.

“Corporate, organizational or individual tax-deductible donations to the teams can be made by contacting the sponsors at each school,” Dauma said. Dauma, Hughes and Reed encourage people to support the DI teams.
