HUNTSVILLE –– The Von Braun III building at Redstone Arsenal has been evacuated due to a suspicious substance.

“The workforce in building 5224, also known as Von Braun III Complex, on Redstone Arsenal was evacuated as a precaution,” Terri Stover said in an April 30 email. “An unknown substance was reported to security and is under investigation by hazardous material experts.”

Stover said employees were allowed to leave work with an excused absence after HEMSI, Military Police and other Huntsville agencies responded to the scene.

“Employees in the building were authorized an excused absence earlier and can return to work once it is determined that the building is safe,” she said.

Redstone Arsenal Garrison Commander John Hamilton said the substance was found by a woman at the largest building at Redstone. The woman, whose name has not been released, called 911 and all personnel responded promptly. Preliminary tests showed no results of any toxins but the building will be shut down until all is clear.

Workers are expected to return on Wednesday, however are advised to check their email just in case there are any delays or closings.
