MADISON – Students rezoned from Mill Creek Elementary School received a warm welcome to Madison Elementary School in a VIP orientation on May 2.

Eighty-eight students will shift from Mill Creek to Madison elementary in August.

Approximately 60 Mill Creek students and 10 parents attended. Visitors received “Madison Elementary VIP” stickers from PTA members and president Melanie Davis.

Principal Dr. Tim Scott and assistant Principal Dr. Georgina Nelson welcomed visitors during a brief program. Scott introduced office and cafeteria staffs, counselor, nurse, librarian and teachers for music, enrichment and physical education. Visitors toured the campus in small groups.

Orientation “for newly rezoned families was a wonderful experience for all involved,” Scott said. “Students and parents became familiar with the building, as well as the faculty and staff.”

“Furthermore, parents and students witnessed the academic rigor we have in the building and the many wonderful activities and events we provide our students throughout the school year,” Scott said.

“What a joy it was to meet and greet our newly rezoned students and their parents,” Nelson said. “We take pride at Madison elementary in our sense of family and community. We’re thrilled to embrace new families into the fold. 2013-2014 is going to be a wonderful year.”

For parent Johna Brazeal, the orientation helped relieve apprehension about transitioning. “Change can be scary. After our visit, we were impressed with the faculty, staff, parent volunteers, and students. How welcoming and friendly everyone was. Now my boys are looking forward to joining the Madison elementary family,” Brazeal said.

Davis overheard Mill Creek students saying: “This is the best playground ever!” “Wow! This gym is huge!” “Can I meet my new teacher?”

“We’re working hard to ‘win the hearts’ of these new families. It’s so hard for them to imagine moving to a new school,” Davis said.

Students received a Madison elementary water bottle with inscribed pencil, eraser, bracelet and stencil ruler from PTA members.

About 80 Madison elementary students have been rezoned to Horizon Elementary School.
