MADISON — Two Bob Jones students received one of the most difficult scholarships in the country.
David Hergenroeder and Martin Wang were presented with the Presidential Scholarship.
“This is an unprecedented achievement,” Dr. Dee Fowler, superintendent of Madison City Schools, said. “To have two from the same school district and the same school is unbelievable. The most sincere congratulations on this award and the honor you’ve brought to yourselves, your family and Bob Jones High School.”
Only 141 students across the nation were selected for the scholarship that involves numerous essay assignments.
“We’ve got the best kids in the State of Alabama at Bob Jones High School,” Principal Robby Parker said. “Once again we’ve proved that. Martin and David are the cream of the crop and I could not be more excited for them.”
Wang, who will attend Auburn in the Fall, thanked all those who influenced him during his time at Bob Jones.
“I really love Bob Jones,” he said. “The teachers and the curriculum here are the best.”
Hergenroeder will attend Yale University in the Fall. He is the third family member in his family to be a National Merit finalist.
“They were all role models for me,” he said. “I never really expected to receive it and I just want to thank everyone that has helped me along the way.”
Wang’s father, Hanching Grant Wang, said the combination of his son’s work ethic combined with an award winning staff at Bob Jones is one of the main reasons that his son flourished.
“Martin really appreciated school and what it meant to him,” he said. “This school has very dedicated teachers and the counselor and staff are very super.”
Parker added that though both will be heading off to college next year, their impact at Bob Jones will last forever.
“Once a Patriot, always a Patriot,” Parker said. “This is not the last that people will hear of these gentleman.”
