MADISON – Fashions and fabrics will blend in a class for loom weaving at Madison Public Library on Friday.

Participants will learn to use a triangle frame loom to weave with continuous thread and then finish and join the triangles. “We will use a 36-inch loom to make a child’s shawl or an adult scarf,” instructor Crystal Kitchens said.

To generate ideas in weaving, a fashion show will feature scarves, shawls, ruanas (a sleeveless wrap similar to a poncho) and ponchos. “You’ll learn how to make your own triangle looms in various sizes,” Kitchens said.

“We’ll learn to weave with continuous yarn and how to correct mistakes, apply fringe and finish edges by chaining,” she said.

Students don’t need weaving or sewing experience. However, experienced students can weave with continuous yarn in patterns like twill and leno and experiment with planning colors for plaids. Or, they can weave with cut yarn in the log cabin pattern, Kitchens said.

The class is open to anyone at least 14 years old. Class hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 17. In six hours, students can weave a child’s shawl or an adult scarf student.

“For those who want a shorter workshop, spend three hours and use a 21-inch loom to make a neckerchief,” Kitchens said. “If you already know how to weave on a triangle loom with continuous thread, we will have other options for you.”

“These workshops (will) help keep handcrafts from earlier centuries alive in the 21st century,” Kitchens said. “I’ve had the pleasure of learning some of these handcrafts from generous teachers. Now, I want to share the pleasure and satisfaction that I’ve found in making something with my hands.”

The supply fee for the class is $6. Reservations are required. Kitchens will provide all needed tools and supplies during the workshop. “Please bring a sack lunch,” she said.
