Asperger Syndrome center announces summer activities

(CONTRIBUTED)

MADISON – Individuals with Asperger Syndrome (AS) can take advantage of summer programs at the AS Support, Educate, Advocate (SEA) Beyond Tomorrow center.

Director Angela Collier has announced six weeks of summer sessions for social skills. Located at 461 Capshaw Road, Suite E in Madison, the center is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

“Each 90-minute session will focus on social skills, auditory processing and executive functioning. We will utilize the latest technology in our teaching,” Collier said. Students will learn about skills with DVDs, social skills activities, Model Me CDs and drama.

“We offer individual tutoring in all academic areas and can pinpoint issues that you are seeing at school,” Collier said.

Sessions will run from June 3-28. Children in grades K-2 will meet on Mondays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. For other age groups, grades 3-5 will meet on Tuesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m.; grades 6-8, Tuesdays, 4:30 to 6 p.m.; and young adults and other adults, Mondays, 2:45 to 4:15 p.m.

More sessions will run from July 8 through 19. The center will be closed during the week of July 4. Grades K-5 will meet on Tuesdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for special activities and outings. Grades 6-8 will follow for recreational sessions on Tuesdays from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. Young adults and other adults will meet on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

Tuition for the six-week summer program is $175.

Year-round, the AS SEA Beyond Tomorrow center offers individual tutoring in all academic areas and social skills deficits, along with help in study skills.

Collier is working on a second set of sessions for late July. “These sessions will be two days per week for 90 minutes and would last two or three weeks to jump start the students for school,” she said.

Collier holds a master’s degree and is certified by the State of Alabama in mild learning handicaps for grads K-12.
