MADISON- This year’s All-Star Sports week in Montgomery will have a big presence from Madison.

Bob Jones will send one softball player, Sydney Booker, basketball player Chandler Elder, and volleyball player Alexis Howell. James Clemens will send basketball player Jordan Harris. And for the first time, a coach from Madison will be in charge of an all-star team.

Bob Jones head football coach Kevin Rose will be the coach of the North All-Star team. Rose was an assistant in the game in 2004 which is a prerequisite to being the head coach.

The AHSAA Summer Conference and All-Star Week is July 15-20. The football game will be Thursday night, July 18 at the Crampton Bowl in downtown Montgomery at 7 p.m.

“Alvin Briggs called me and asked if I would serve as the head coach and I was honored to be asked,” Rose said. “It’s a great opportunity. It recognizes the job our coaching staff and players have done here at Bob Jones over the past four seasons and have earned state-wide respect for winning four straight region championships.”

Alvin Briggs of the AHSAA is the director of the All-Star Sports Week.

The week features coaching clinics, a sports equipment expo at the Montgomery Convention Center, and dozens of athletes practicing and playing games. Over 4,000 coaches, athletic directors, and principals from across the state participate in the event.

Rose has filled out his coaching staff with Shawn Raney of Spain Park, Eddie Bullock of Anniston, Lee Ozmint of Glencoe, Jason Lard of Lexington, John Ritter of Red Bay, Matt Glover of Pinson Valley and Nick Folds of Alabama Christian.

The game is unique because graduated seniors will fill out the rosters. Other sports at the games will bring rising juniors to play. Division 1 scholarship players typically enroll in their university in the summer and that makes them ineligible to play in this game.

“What we get are kids going to Division 2 or NAIA schools on scholarships or kids trying to get an invitation to walk-on or still trying to find a spot to play,” Rose said.

There are rules that must be adhered to for selecting players. Every district and classification must be included when the coaches begin issuing invites to play.

“You want everybody to be represented in a state wide all star game like this,” Rose said.

“We stay on the campus of Auburn-Montgomery and practice twice a day. It’s a great time of camaraderie among the coaches and a chance to learn some football from them and build some relationships.”

Two graduated seniors from Bob Jones will fill out the roster, Kevin Wright and Jordan Shelton, both of whom signed scholarships to play in college.

The North won last year’s game 34-12.
