MADISON — The “Toomers for Tuscaloosa” drive for tornado victims proved to be a success for the Madison location.
A donation drop-off site was set up in the Old Time Pottery parking lot on Madison Blvd. on May 24 and with the help of the surrounding community, the transportation truck was nearly full.
“I think we had a pretty good turnout,” coordinator Connie Campbell said. “Earlier in the day we had a group come out from Pope John Paul II Catholic High School and drop duffel bags, that they were going to get rid of, full of supplies.”
Campbell said most of the items dropped off at the site were for babies and young children.
“We got a lot of diapers, wipes and toys which is good,” she said.
The truck of supplies will depart Madison on May 24 for Birmingham. All of the supplies will be loaded onto a 18-wheeler bound for Norman, Okla. The drive in Madison was just one of many going on throughout the state sponsored by “Toomers for Tuscaloosa.”
“There was a young man who came by early and was visibly moved by this,” Campbell said. “He had a bag of toiletries and what not and left a note with a message in there offering his support. So I just thought it was a nice gesture.”
