Flowers leaves Discovery to work as secondary instructional specialist

MADISON – Jacquelyn ‘Jackie’ Flowers has joined the Central Office staff as secondary instructional specialist for Madison City Schools.

Flowers believes she was an asset to Discovery Middle School as instructional partner since 2009. She applied for secondary instructional specialist “to be an asset to our district professional learning community and district family,” she said.

“My passion is instruction. I see this as an opportunity to work with all educators in our district,” Flowers said.

Flowers will work with director of instruction Dr. Camille Wright, elementary instruction coordinator Judy Warmath and elementary instructional specialist Stacy Blair. “We will design professional learning, based on needs of our instructional partners, which include teachers, (administrators) and curriculum teams in math and English,” Flowers said.

This group confirms that students are learning and progressing to graduate, ready for college or a job.

Several years ago, proration eliminated this position, along with two other instructional jobs. Heather Donaldson, now assistant principal at James Clemens High School, previously held the position. “As Madison City Schools … and state mandates … continue to grow, it became imperative to bring this position back,” Flowers said.

After attending Enterprise State Junior College, Flowers earned a bachelor’s degree at Troy State University and master’s degrees in educational leadership at the University of Alabama and secondary mathematics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

A native of Enterprise, Flowers lived in this area in the 1980s and returned four years ago. “There’s no better place to live and work,” she said.

Flowers also has worked as adjunct math professor at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham; math and distance learning teacher, Oneonta High School; and math teacher at Pinson Valley and McAdory high schools.

Flowers is a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and “Who’s Who Among American High School Teachers.” She has written book reviews for the Mathematical Association of America, served on the advisory board for “Mathematics Illuminated” and consulted for “Other Dimensions and Game Theory.”
