MADISON – Sylvia Lambert is the new assistant principal at Liberty Middle School.

After teaching three years at Bob Jones High School, she joined the charter faculty at James Clemens High School. She served as special education department lead and taught ninth-and tenth-grade collaborative English and reading intervention classes.

Lambert said she has enjoyed the classroom environment, small group interactions and “discussing students’ future aspirations and how they plan to realize their dreams.”

At Liberty, she will work with Principal Nelson Brown and focus on special education processes, pupil support teams, positive behavior supports, discipline, clubs and activities.

Lambert said the middle school environment differs greatly “from … the high school scene. Middle school is a positive environment for student growth in academic learning, emotional maturation, time management and organization for transition to high school.”

For two summers, Lambert co-led and taught in the extended school-year program that served about 70 students at Mill Creek Elementary School.

She earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Mississippi, master’s degree at Auburn University at Montgomery and education specialist credentials at Alabama A & M University.

Before teaching in Madison, she taught three years each in Memphis and Montgomery.

Lambert fondly recalls her tenth-grade English teacher, “who brought literature to life” for the class, including an exchange student who lived with Sylvia’s family. “The teacher made sure the exchange student (and) all of her students understood the literature selections.”

“We often stayed after school with this teacher to work on assignments. Students had an outstanding relationship with this teacher. High expectations were met because of that positive relationship,” Lambert said.

Her husband Mark Lambert teaches social studies and coaches boys’ basketball coach at Monrovia Middle School. Their son Daniel is majoring in German and international trade at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Daughter Shelby is a senior nursing major and rowing team member at Samford University.

Away from school, Sylvia enjoys golfing, running and working out. Last year, she completed her first marathon and triathlon.
