HUNTSVILLE – Youth can enjoy a cool dessert, check out the ‘waves’ and delve into the brain at upcoming sessions at Sci-Quest Hands-on Science Center.

To celebrate National Ice Cream Sandwich Day, visitors will learn how to make ice cream by using science principles on Aug. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. “Everyone can create their own special flavor of ice cream and then make ice cream sandwiches using dry ice,” marketing manager Jennifer Deermer said.

Compliments of Blue Bell, free ice cream sandwiches will be handed out while supplies last. General admission covers this event.

Then on Aug. 3, Parents’ Night Out will be open to children who are 4 through 12 years old. Drop-off begins at 5:30 p.m. for the session from 6 to 10 p.m.

“Different monthly themes enhance the experience with fun hands-on activities and crafts to take home,” Deermer said. “This month, children will learn more about the brain. They will construct a model of their own brain and observe the instructors as they dissect a real sheep brain.”

Parents’ Night Out is offered monthly on the first Saturday and third Friday. “Children will enjoy a pizza dinner, a movie and playtime on the exhibit floor in a secure environment,” Deermer said. Cost is $23 for the first child and $18 for each additional child, with 10-percent discount to Sci-Quest members. Parents must register in advance.

On National Radio Day, visitors can learn about the science, history and art of radio. Radio Day activities on Aug. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. are included with general admission.

Local ham radio operators will explain the use of their radio equipment. The youth can have their first experience as a disc jockey on “our Electromagnetic Spectrum exhibit, while playing with sound mixing technology. It is sure to be a rockin’ good time,” Deermer said.

Sci-Quest’s current address is 102-D Wynn Drive in Huntsville. For more information, call 256-837-0606 or visit sci-quest.org.
