HUNTSVILLE – Teenagers, college students and adults can enhance their stage strategies at the Lee Deal Theatre Symposium.

The Arts Council Inc. and the theatre department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville are presenting the workshops on Aug. 24 from 1 to 6:30 p.m. at UAH. The Lee Deal & Friends Theatre Endowment also is supporting the event.

The endowment and symposium memorializes the late Lee Deal, a prominent figure in community theatre for many years.

The symposium will start at 1 p.m. The three sessions each will last 75 minutes. A reception will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Tiffany Little Canfield will lead the “Casting & Audition Techniques Master Class.” Canfield works as casting director with Telsey + Company, a major New York City casting office. On Broadway, Canfield has performed in “La Boheme,” “Rock of Ages,” “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” “Title of Show” and “Enron.”

In films, Canfield’s credits include both iterations of “Sex and the City,” “Jonah Hex,” “Rachel Getting Married,” “The Odd Life of Timothy Green” and “RENT.” On NBC last season, she acted in “Smash.”

Brian Phillips of Chicago will conduct “Setting Your Stage: The Intersection of Script, Design & Budget.” Phillips worked about 10 years with Goodman Theatre, Chicago’s oldest and largest not-for-profit theater.

At Goodman, Phillips assisted more than 30 world premieres, including “Finishing the Picture,” “The Long Red Road” directed by Phillip Seymour-Hoffman and “Turn of the Century.” He has performed at the Kennedy Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music and Barbican Centre in London.

Currently, Phillips serves as technical director of theatre production at Ohio Northern University, his alma mater.

Local playwright and actor Ron Harris will present “Scene Study Master Class.” In 2005, Harris retired after a 40-year career as an educator, including 20 years as director of the drama magnet program at Lee High School. Harris has won numerous awards for costuming, set designs and directing.

Registration fee is $20. To register, visit artshuntsville.org/our-programs.
