Sci-Quest to bring out ‘inner geek’ in adults

HUNTSVILLE – Sci-Quest Hands-on Science Center is known for its outstanding children’s activities. Now, Sci-quest is launching a monthly workshop just for adults … especially the self-proclaimed ‘geeks.’

Geeks' Night Out workshops start on Oct. 10 at Sci-Quest. (CONTRIBUTED)

Geeks’ Night Out workshops will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

“Geeks’ Night Out workshops are a great place to learn a new science skill, meet new people and play on the Sci-Quest exhibits,” Sci-Quest Marketing Manager Jennifer Deermer said. Participants do not need any experience or skills for the workshops, which a Sci-Quest educator will lead.

For the first workshop on Oct. 10, the “Wearable Electronics” session will answer the yearly dilemma of what masquerade to wear for Halloween.

“Do you want to have the most awesome geek-tastic costume, but not sure what to do?” Deermer said. “We’ll show you some easy ways to make this year’s Halloween costume light up, twinkle and shine with wearable electronics.”

The “Molecular Gastronomy” workshop on Nov. 14 will incorporate geeky science twists with the Thanksgiving feast. “You can see some of the cool stuff chefs are doing in the kitchen,” Deermer said. “We’ll make cranberry gels that pop in your mouth, little pillows of gravy, chocolate noodles and mess with your guests’ taste buds.”

On Dec. 12, the “Digital Photography” workshop will allow participants “to unleash your creativity for the holidays. We’ll create some simple but fun digital photography effects with a geeky twist using holiday lights, aperture settings, macro and a few photo editing techniques,” she said.

Photography participants should bring a digital camera and a USB cable or card reader to download and edit photos.

Workshop participants are welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks. Food trucks, including On-On Tacos and Sugar Belle, will be on-site before the workshops.

Sci-Quest’s current address is 102-D Wynn Drive. The science center plans to relocate to Madison on Madison Boulevard.

Cost is $20 for members and $30 for non-members per workshop. Pre-registration is required. Call 256-837-0606 or visit sci-quest.org.
