Starting with the 2014-2015 school year, the state legislature’s mandates to Alabama school systems will end for the school calendar’s start/end dates.

In the revised and approved calendar, Madison students will start to school on Aug. 5, 2014. The last day of classes for students will be May 21, 2015.

The calendar returns a weeklong fall break in 2014 on Oct. 6-10 for Madison students and teachers.

Teachers have workdays on July 29-31, Aug 1 and 4 in 2014 and Jan. 5 and May 22 in 2015. Also, collaborative days will allow teachers and students to meet on Sept. 26 and Oct. 31 in 2014 and Feb. 13 and April 17 in 2015.

School will be closed to observe Labor Day, Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Presidents Day. Thanksgiving break will be observed Nov. 26-28, 2014.

With first semester ending on Dec. 19, 2014, school will be dismissed for winter holidays from Dec. 22 through Jan. 2, 2015. Teachers will return on Jan. 5, followed by students for the first day of second semester on Jan. 6. Spring break will be observed on March 23-27, 2015.

The calendars for Madison City Schools, Huntsville City Schools and Madison County Schools now jive. Graduation ceremonies for seniors at Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools will be held on May 18, 2015.

A calendar committee originally presented a 2014-2015 calendar to the Madison board on Oct. 29. However, that proposal was adjusted with feedback from parents, teacher and students to produce the finalized version.
