MADISON – Organizers and volunteers for Relay for Life in Madison are set to launch their 2014 campaign to benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS).

“Our first team, committee and relay meetings will be Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. at Bancorp South at 7302 U.S. 72,” Madison chairperson Leigh Christian said. “Come support us in our fight against cancer.”

The Madison Relay for Life will be held May 9.

Christian actively participates with Relay for Life “because I want to make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer. I wanted my daughter Katy to get involved because her dad Mark is in remission from cancer.”

Christian was motivated to have her daughter feel a sense of making a difference.

“I got involved because my friend Beth asked. So many times, people will get involved if you just ask,” Christian said.

She describes Relay for Life as “one of the most amazing things that I have ever been a part of. I hope you will join in the fun for a great cause.”

Cancer has affected the lives of practically everyone, either in a personal battle or with a loved one. “Every day, the ACS is helping us stay well by preventing cancer or finding it at its earliest, most treatable stages,” Christian said.

ACS assists families in finding “the best resources to help their friend or loved one deal with a diagnosis and their journey to get well,” Christian said. “The American Cancer Society is also rallying communities like ours through events like Relay For Life — to fight back and find cures for this disease.”

Christian encourages residents to join a relay team or donate to help “create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Together, we can help make sure that cancer never steals another year of anyone’s life.”
