MADISON – The next concert in the Music at Messiah series will feature an accomplished guitarist and flutist with the unlikely name of ‘Toot and Twang.’

Classical guitarist Phil Weaver and flutist Rosa Vidro Richardson, who named their duo Toot and Twang, will perform a wide range of Latin America music. The duo will focus on sambas, tangos and dances by Piazzolla, Machado, Villa-Lobos, Merlin, Ibert and Solis.

Messiah Lutheran Church at 7740 U.S. 72 in Madison will host the concert on April 27 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. A reception with the performers will follow the concert, spokesperson John Shriver said.

All concerts in the Music at Messiah series are open to the public and are free. Donations, sponsors and program advertisers are welcome.

Weaver has performed more than 30 years in the United States and abroad. He was the first guitarist to be awarded an individual artist’s fellowship from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Weaver is listed on the Music Achievers roster at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

He has performed solo concerts throughout Europe and the United States and concertos with orchestra and smaller ensembles. Weaver collaborated with pianist Ingrid von Spakovsky on a critically acclaimed CD, “Consonare.”

Flying Monkey Arts Center in Huntsville has hosted cabaret-style concerts that Weaver has produced with artists ranging from dancers to visual artists. He founded and serves as artistic director of the City Lights and Stars Series at Burritt on the Mountain.

Richardson is flute instructor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She has performed with the Huntsville and Paducah, Ky. symphonies and has served as clinician and performer in several flute festivals.

Richardson’s musical knowledge led her to win outstanding young artist competitions in Kentucky and Mid-South festivals.

“We at Messiah Lutheran Church are excited to offer this series to anyone who believes that beautiful music plays an essential role in our lives,” Shriver said.
