MONTGOMERY — Attorney General Luther Strange announced in a press release that Roland Gilbert Campos III was sentenced July 7 to life without parole for sodomy of a five-year-old girl. He was also sentenced to two terms of 20 years imprisonment for additional sex crimes against the child.

Campos, of New Market, was convicted by a jury in Madison County Circuit Court on June 11.

The Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division presented evidence at trial that included a detailed interview with the victim about repeated crimes of sexual abuse and sodomy the occurred throughout 2012. The girl’s babysitter also testified that the girl told her what Campos had done to her.

Campos admitted during testimony that the child was usually truthful and that he had been with her on the times in question.  The defendant had been dating the victim’s mother.

Following a three-day trial, the jury found Campos guilty of two counts of first-degree sexual abuse of a child aged less than 12 years and two counts of first-degree sodomy.

“The sentence of life without parole is an appropriate punishment that provides a measure of justice for this tragedy of horrendous abuse against a defenseless young child,” Strange said. “It is important that this defendant will no longer be a danger to this child or any other. With this sentence, we send a strong message that such vile crimes against children will not be tolerated.”

Strange commended those involved in the prosecution of this case, noting in particular Assistant Attorneys General Kelly Hawkins Godwin and Andrew Arrington of his Criminal Trials Division, Victim Service Officer Doris Hancock of his Office of Victim Assistance and special agents of his Investigations Division. He also thanked the National Children’s Advocacy Center.
