MADISON – Officers in the Madison Police Department have planned another community outreach program. As Kids Camps is targeted for younger children, their new program will benefit teenagers.

The 2014 Teen Academy will be held at the police department, 100 Hughes Road on July 22-24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The academy accepted any high school student who is at least 17 years old. Back in May, the department distributed registration forms at Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools and online at the city website.

During the camp, Madison SROs (School Resource Officers) will present a wide range of topics and supervise the academy youth.

They will discuss community policing, criminal investigations and processing of crime scenes. Officers will explain safety procedures and the legitimate use of force.

In addition, traffic stops and the search and seizure of a suspect will be explained. Officers will talk about procedures that they use during traffic stops. For personal safety, the police will offer weapons safety training, an introduction and demonstration of tasers and defensive tactics that an individual can take.

The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team will participate in the academy. Police dogs will demonstrate their training during a visit from the K-9 Unit.

Class space is limited to 30 attendees.

Participants have paid $25 to help offset the cost of T-shirts and consumable items. The Madison Police Foundation, which sponsors Kids Camp, is providing funding for the academy.

For more information, call special resource officers Archie Ange at Bob Jones, 256-772-2547, ext. 80306; Jason Sims, Bob Jones, 256-772-2547, ext. 80412; and Jason Whitecotton, James Clemens, 256-216-5313, ext. 95118.
