MADISON – Cindy Huskey hopes to have the refurbished media center at Bob Jones High School open for second semester. However, she needs help in returning about 11,000 books, plus other materials, to the shelves.

“The makeshift library I set up this semester was the best I could do under the circumstances, but Bob Jones students really need their library back,” Huskey said. “I’m determined to make sure this space is ready to go by Jan. 5.”

Huskey, media specialist at Bob Jones, has been working even before winter break started on Dec. 19 to return all materials. The media center update is part of the school’s $20,474,795 renovation plan, which Madison Board of Education approved in September 2013.

“I’ve been cleaning everything that came from storage with help from a few students,” Huskey said. “Then, I’ll be unpacking books, equipment, supplies and other library materials.”

Most furniture already is in place, but some seating will need arranging.

“The renovated media center is a bit of a mess, so volunteers need to wear old clothes and may want to bring a pair of rubber gloves,” Huskey said. “I’m most grateful for any help.”

Huskey will work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 20-23 and 27-30, along with Jan. 2-3.

Chores for the workroom include cleaning the microwave, wiping cabinet shelves and drawers, moving the refrigerator, sorting copy paper, unpacking/organizing supplies and preparing the supply closet.

In the storage room, workers need to clean audio-visual carts and equipment, unpack/shelve various books, organize bulletin board and display items, store empty book carts and unpack/store bookends and easels.

Among professional resources, the DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs and CDRs must be arranged. A couple of pieces of furniture must be moved.

Around the circulation desk, Patriot shop items must be sorted and desk items organized.

Students can earn service hours for their clubs. “Parents are always welcome,” Huskey said.
