Comic Science Improv takes audience’s cues

MADISON – No rehearsal, no direction works on cue for a local improvisation group, Comic Science Improv.

Founded in 2012, the group “offers unique comedy entertainment that everyone can enjoy (while having) lots of fun ourselves,” director David Hitt said. Suggestions from the audience guide their shows.

Jason Sims is deputy director. Cast members are Madison residents Ariel Graham, Beth Ridgeway, Jeremy Shelley and Morgan Wilson.

Comic Science Improv doesn’t charge a membership fee. Interested individuals can attend weekly rehearsals and receive free lessons until they’re ready to perform on stage.

A typical show has various short, funny “improv games, similar to what you see on ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ (television series),” Hitt said. For example, a scene could require the cast to speak only in questions.

“The great thing about seeing improv live is you’re the one telling the performers what to do. It’s completely different every time,” Hitt said.

Their special shows have included Santa’s Village performances, all-Shakespeare library benefit and birthday parties.

In 2013, the group performed a full-length science fiction play. The same characters appeared each time but in different, audience-defined story lines.

“When you come to a Comic Science show, you always know what to expect, but you also know to always expect the unexpected,” Hitt said.

The troupe’s acting experience ranges from community theater to “never setting foot on stage. We’ve had everyone from high school students to retirees,” Hitt said.

Ridgeway enjoys being “completely spontaneous while making people laugh. Learning to go with the flow and finding humor in life are skills that everyone should have.” Graham likes the comical setup that is tempered by the group’s dedication.

“Improv comedy serves as a catharsis for me in so many ways,” Shelley said. “Cutting loose and going crazy with trusted scene partners is extremely freeing.”

Comic Science Improv performs monthly on third Fridays at Crosswinds Church on Browns Ferry Road.
