Downtown library to present two-part ‘Mind Your Money’

HUNTSVILLE – Library personnel have expanded a 2013 program about a subject on the minds of practically everyone … money.

Huntsville-Madison County Public Library will offer “Mind Your Money” classes on Jan. 22 and 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Classes will be held at the downtown Huntsville library, 915 Monroe St. in the second-floor Events Room.

The program is free. Light refreshments will be served.

“This financial literacy program received such a strong reception last year that we have added a two-part advanced course to the grant program,” communications director Ann Marie Martin said.

Mind Your Money can boost individuals’ investing know-how in 2015. “What if you’re eager to buy individual stocks, but you don’t know how to get started? ‘Basic Stock Valuation’ is an advanced course presented as an extension of the library’s Mind Your Money,” Martin said.

Expert instructors will show participants ways to use basic stock investing tools, including Morningstar Investment Research Center. “This online database offers library patrons real-time access to comprehensive data and independent analysis on thousands of investments, spanning mutual funds, stocks, exchange-traded funds and closed-end funds,” she said.

Individuals who can’t attend classes in person can participate online. The classes will be broadcast at hmcpl.adobeconnect.com/mym. Questions posted to the chat room will be relayed to the instructors at the end of the session.

Mind Your Money is funded by a grant from the Investor Education Foundation with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) through “Smart investing @ your library,” a partnership with the American Library Association.
