Bob Jones to host Math-A-Palooza on Pi Day, March 14

MADISON – A popular academic contest, Madison City Schools Math-A-Palooza, will return on Pi Day, March 14, sponsored by the Bob Jones High School Math Team.

The Math-A-Palooza tournament is open to third- through sixth-graders in Madison City Schools. The event blends mathematics problem-solving with a fun, upbeat atmosphere.

Math-A-Palooza “is a great opportunity for schools, parents and community to encourage and foster an appreciation for mathematics in our elementary school students,” math team coach and teacher Kimberly Cox said.

Math-A-Palooza involves written questions only and no team scores, just individuals. Students also can enter a poster contest, judged on creativity, relation to math and presentation. Members of math teams will play in Division I; other students will compete in Division II.

On March 14, registration will run from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. “The test begins at 9:26 a.m., because pi is 3.1415926…,” Cox said. In various classrooms, contestants will take tests until 10:26 a.m.

Parents should remain on-site in the cafeteria during testing.

 

The Dispute Room will be open from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Students can “enjoy Pi Day Fun in the cafeteria, buy snacks, check out the poster gallery or throw a ‘pi’ in the face of Bob Jones Math Team members,” Cox said. They also can hear pi-related stories or play “Pi Day Jeopardy.”

The awards ceremony will be held at noon in the gym.

Registration deadline is Feb. 20. Registration fee is $5. T-shirts (optional) are $10.

To-date, Eat Pie Institute and Appleton Learning are sponsoring Math-A-Palooza.

Judy Warmath, Stacy Blair and Laura Roberson have helped Cox plan the event. “My students are doing a great job writing questions, brainstorming ideas and organizing the tournament,” Cox said. “All Bob Jones administrators have been very supportive.”

Cox acknowledged elementary teachers for encouraging students to participate.
