MADISON – A popular academic contest, Madison City Schools Math-A-Palooza, will return on Pi Day, March 14, sponsored by the Bob Jones High School Math Team.

The Math-A-Palooza tournament is open to third- through sixth-graders in Madison City Schools. The event blends mathematics problem-solving with a fun, upbeat atmosphere.

Math-A-Palooza “is a great opportunity for schools, parents and community to encourage and foster an appreciation for mathematics in our elementary school students,” math team coach and teacher Kimberly Cox said.

Math-A-Palooza involves written questions only and no team scores, just individuals. Students also can enter a poster contest, judged on creativity, relation to math and presentation. Members of math teams will play in Division I; other students will compete in Division II.

On March 14, registration will run from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. “The test begins at 9:26 a.m., because pi is 3.1415926…,” Cox said. In various classrooms, contestants will take tests until 10:26 a.m.

Parents should remain on-site in the cafeteria during testing.

The Dispute Room will be open from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m. Students can “enjoy Pi Day Fun in the cafeteria, buy snacks, check out the poster gallery or throw a ‘pi’ in the face of Bob Jones Math Team members,” Cox said. They also can hear pi-related stories or play “Pi Day Jeopardy.”

The awards ceremony will be held at noon in the gym.

Registration deadline is Feb. 20. Registration fee is $5. T-shirts (optional) are $10.

To-date, Eat Pie Institute and Appleton Learning are sponsoring Math-A-Palooza.

Judy Warmath, Stacy Blair and Laura Roberson have helped Cox plan the event. “My students are doing a great job writing questions, brainstorming ideas and organizing the tournament,” Cox said. “All Bob Jones administrators have been very supportive.”

Cox acknowledged elementary teachers for encouraging students to participate.

Bob Jones Math Team will use proceeds to offset transportation and registration fees for math tournaments. For more information, email to kcox@madisoncity.k12.al.us.
