MADISON – The weather might be frigid, and the trees’ bare branches icy, but fifth-graders at elementary schools from around the City were asked to conjure images of luscious green foliage as part of the 2015 Arbor Day Poster Contest sponsored by the Madison Beautification and Tree Board.
The topic this year was “Trees are terrific…in cities and towns!” Fifth-grade students from Columbia, Heritage, Madison, Mill Creek, Rainbow and West Madison Elementary schools from Madison City Schools, in addition to St. John the Baptist Elementary, put on their artist caps and adorned posters with pictures of trees in all manner of settings.
“This poster contest offers an opportunity to fifth-graders to learn the importance of trees in our environment,” Marsha Harris, member of the Madison Beautification and Tree Board, said. “It also offers an opportunity for the community to recognize the insight and creativity of our young people.”
Students who placed first, second, third and honorable mention at their respective schools placed their works of art in the lobby of the Madison Municipal Complex, where it was admired before the Madison City Council meeting Feb. 9.
The award winners and their families were also recognized by Mayor Troy Trulock at the beginning of the meeting.
Over five hundred students submitted posters in the competition, Harris mentioned. The first-place posters from each school were sent to Anniston, Ala. on Feb. 10 to be judged against winners from around the state.
First-place winners are: Sara Guo, Columbia; Elizabeth Busby, Heritage; Shaniya Jacobs-Lanier, Madison; Mackenzie Carden, Mill Creek; Jessica Swartz, Rainbow; Brenna Vital, St. John the Baptist; and Sullivan Cooper, West Madison.
Arbor Day falls on April 24 this spring.
