Heritage science projects excel at UAH

MADISON – Inquisitive-minded students at Heritage Elementary School showed their technical aptitude at the North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair.

The University of Alabama in Huntsville hosted the fair on March 12.

Among the fifth-grade standouts, Tyler Nix developed “What Materials Can Interfere with a Wireless Signal?” to become a finalist and second-place winner in the physical science category. Harrison Strong’s “Build Your Own FM Radio … and Determine What Type of Antenna Works Best” received an honorable mention and special awards from IEEE and the U.S. Army.

Fifth-graders also receiving honorable mention were Boone McKee, “Water Vs. Soda”; Jillian Gallagher, “Is Organic Better?”; Hunter Scruggs, “3 Squirts and You’re Out”; and Diane Schott, “Don’t Crack the Egg.”

In sixth-grade, Anna Vogler entered her project, “Making Apple Juice with Enzymes,” to earn first place junior overall in the chemistry division and place as finalist. Also a regional finalist, Ethan King earned second place overall in the junior plant science division with “pH Plants.”

“Avoiding Disaster” by Jeremy Anderson rated second place for the Society of American Engineers award. Caroline Bendickson presented “The Gluten Verdict” to rank as a finalist and second-place winner overall in the junior behavioral science division and a special award from the U.S. Army.

Other sixth-grade finalists were Andrea Torres, “Stop Soil Erosion”; Jackson Lanier, “Science Friction”; Aubrey Blomeley, “Save a Mint When You Print”; Kaya Lyons, “Rise of the Yeast”; and Allyson Thammavongsa, “Lubricants and Mechanical Operations.”

Heritage sixth-graders who received honorable mention at the North Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair were Hayden Clift and Abby Ryder, “Is Your Ice Clean?”; Andrew Boothe and John August Busch, “Oxidation Rate of Metals”; Lauren Assef and Emma Drake, “Does Music Make it Memorable?”; Ella Taylor and Laylah Griggs, “Chip Factor”; and Caitlyn Johnson, “Effects of Music.”
