MADISON – How did Buttermilk Alley gets its name? How did workers move Madison United Methodist Church’s building to its current location? What was the first business to open on Main Street?

These questions and numerous other facts will be answered during two free Spring Walking Tours. Huntsville/Madison County Visitors & Convention Bureau sponsors the tours locally. Communities across Alabama conduct the informative tours each spring.

On April 18, Larry Anderson will explain sites in Madison’s downtown historical district. Jeanne Steadman will lead the group and discuss downtown points of interest on April 25. Anderson and Steadman will share vignettes about past and present homeowners, styles of architecture and community legends from Madison’s past.

Steadman has coordinated the Madison walks for several years. “The tours are a great way to learn about Madison’s historic district and its historic homes. It is free and a fun way to spend a Saturday morning in spring,” Steadman said.

The tour group will gather at the Roundhouse on Front Street. Tours start at 10 a.m. and will last from 60 to 90 minutes.
