HARVEST – Jazelyn Little of Harvest has been awarded a $2,000 scholarship from the Ascend Cares Foundation.

Ascend Performance Materials manages and funds the Ascend Cares Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The foundation awarded five scholarships to children of Ascend employees in Alabama, Florida and Texas.

Ascend Performance Materials is one of the world’s leading producers of chemicals and nylon resin. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, the company has approximately 3,500 full-time and contract personnel, including 370 in Decatur.

Eighteen-year-old Little graduated in May from Sparkman High School. She will use the money to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she will study forensic science.

Applicants were required to hold a 3.0 GPA minimum and demonstrate a record of community service. “Jazelyn is a very impressive young woman,” Ascend Performance Materials Communications Specialist David Rosen said.

At Sparkman, Little was a member of National Honor Society and played flute and piccolo in the Sparkman Senator marching and concert bands. During breaks in school, Jazelyn volunteered with her church, Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Harvest, at Valley View Health and Rehab in Madison and at Sci-Quest Hands-on Science Center in Huntsville.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to invest in bright young minds like Jazelyn,” foundation executive director Marianne Cone said. “Our scholarship committee was very impressed with Jazelyn’s hard work in school and this impressive young woman’s commitment to her community.”

Jazelyn’s parents are J.B. and Angela Little. J.B. Little works as a processor at the Ascend Performance Materials plant in Decatur, which processes nylon and chemicals.

Ascend Performance Materials is a global premium provider of high-quality chemicals, fibers and plastics. Ascend is the world’s largest integrated nylon business, with its own in-house manufacturing facilities, ensuring total security of supply.
