MADISON – Discovery Middle School has a new principal. Eric Terrell will lead the Panther student body and faculty.

Most recently, Terrell has been working as assistant principal at James Clemens High School. No stranger to Discovery, he taught and was an assistant coach there from 2004-2005.

He was a teacher and assistant principal at Bob Jones High School from 2006-2012. He also served as Bob Jones assistant head football coach and principal for summer school programs. Terrell taught and was head football and basketball coach at Liberty Middle School.

Robby Parker, Madison City Schools Assistant Superintendent, led the search committee for Discovery’s top administrator. Parker said Terrell has excellent qualifications and will be a great asset for Discovery.

“Mr. Terrell is one of the most selfless leaders Madison City has ever had,” Parker said. “His addition to Discovery Middle School is a slam dunk.”

Terrell has served as assistant principal at James Clemens since its opening in 2012. He was responsible for overseeing athletics, school safety, student discipline, staff acquisition, finances and other aspects.

“I’d venture to say you can’t go to a James Clemens event whether it be a choir concert, a drama performance or sporting event and not find Mr. Terrell there supporting the school and the students,” Parker said.

Terrell received an associate’s degree at Bevill State Community College in Hamilton, his hometown. He earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education at Alabama A&M University, where he graduated magna cum laude. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Grand Canyon University.

He also worked as a computer specialist for a Huntsville firm.

He and his wife Laterra have two daughters: Kelsey, who will enter first grade at Mill Creek Elementary School, and three-year-old Kylee.

Eric Terrell replaces Melanie Barkley, who resigned to accept a similar position with Athens City Schools.
