Sarah Elizabeth “Betty” DeVaughn Guest, age 77, of Madison, AL, formerly of Huntsville, AL, West Palm Beach, FL and Montezuma, GA, passed away at home in Madison, AL on Saturday, September 19, 2015.

Known in her later years with great affection as “G”, “G-mom” or simply Grandmother, Betty was blessed with an incredibly kind heart, wonderful smile and tireless devotion to her family and friends. Betty was a member of Valley Presbyterian Church in Madison and proud member of a special group of friends in Madison and Huntsville known simply as “Supper Club”.

Betty spent a year at Sullins College in Bristol Virginia and graduated from The University of Georgia, where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Her school loyalties, however, and her love for sports also stretched east to Auburn University, where her three sons and a still growing list of grandchildren earned degrees.

Betty was born November 23, 1937 in Montezuma, GA, to the late James Elijah DeVaughn and Elizabeth Holleman DeVaughn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Harold Guest, III, and two brothers, James Elijah DeVaughn, Jr. and Joseph Holleman DeVaughn.

Betty is survived by her three sons, Walter Harold Guest, III (Kathy) of Madison, AL, Elijah DeVaughn Guest (Amy) of Johns Creek, GA, and Benton Cheves Guest (Kindra) of Melbourne, FL and her ten grandchildren to whom she was truly “Grand”, Kaitlin Guest Grubbs (Taylor), Walter Lee Guest, Holly Marie Guest, Abigail Anne Guest, Sarah Kathleen Guest, William Elijah Guest, Sarah Cassidy Guest, William Connor Guest, Benton Coleman Guest and James Cody Guest.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, September 25, 2015 at Felton Cemetery in Montezuma, GA. The Rev. William Plott of Valley Presbyterian Church (Madison, AL) officiated the service. Visitation was held an hour prior to the service at Watson-Mathews Funeral Home in Montezuma, GA. Additionally, on Saturday, September 26 at 11:30 a.m., a memorial service was held at Valley Presbyterian Church in Madison, AL.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Northeast Alabama FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes), P.O. Box 14185, Huntsville, AL 35815; phone: 256-536-7333; www.northalabamafca.org.
