MADISON – Christmas arrived early at the Madison City Council meeting on Oct. 26.

Councilman Steve Smith reported that Madison County Commissioner Steve Haraway has donated a 2016 Ford Expedition, valued at $34,852, to Madison Fire Department.

Mayor Troy Trulock announced a ribbon cutting for the new pavilion on Rainbow Mountain on Oct. 30 at 11 a.m. The structure was a joint effort among the City of Madison, Land Trust of North Alabama and Madison County.

The council approved payment of $33,500 to Volkert & Associates for professional services related to construction management for the recreation campus. This expense will be paid from 2013 bond account.

Other payments involved these scenarios:

* Barge, Waggoner, Sumner & Cannon Inc. — $41,145.78 for work completed to-date on Garner Street Extended and drainage improvements.

* Reed Contracting — $1,361.72 for materials supplies to repair Madison Utilities trench failures.

* J.W. Kennedy Land Surveying — $1,312.50 for detention pond modifications.

* Vulcan Materials — $679.50 for materials on detention pond modifications.

* NPDES Services — $300 for improvements on Mose Chapel Road.

* OMI Inc. — $150 for NPDES inspections on detention pond modifications.

With Vulcan Heating and Air Conditioning Inc., council issued a conditional approval for a professional services agreement for HVAC maintenance in city buildings, contingent on the state Ethics Commission ruling about Vulcan’s owner having a seat with the redevelopment authority.

Trulock reported that Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools’ football teams are ranked number one and number three, respectively, for the state in Class 7A. Niche, a national statistics and ranking organization, has ranked Discovery and Liberty middle schools as number 11 and 10, respectively, among Alabama’s best middle schools.

Council President Tommy Overcash said Madison Station Historical Preservation Society is again selling commemorative brick pavers to expand the Roundhouse walkway. Each brick costs $35. Interested individuals can order a brick by contacting chairperson Debbie Overcash or completing an application at historicmadisonstation.com.
