MADISON – A weekly series of free workshops on gardening and landscaping will start on Feb. 16 at Dublin Park, 8324 Old Madison Pike.

Master Gardeners of North Alabama (MGNA) are presenting the 2016 Lunch ‘n Learn Workshops in cooperation with Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Sessions will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“The first workshop on Feb. 16, ‘Pruning for Arbor Day,’ will help you learn how and when to prune many of our most common trees and shrubs and will be taught by area Master Gardeners,” publicist Sue Khoury said.

“The following week, Herb Lewis, a local birding and gardening enthusiast and honorary Master Gardener, will present ‘Water Features in the Landscape,’ showcasing his techniques for creating gorgeous, calming, wildlife-attracting ponds, reflecting pools, birdbaths and fountains,” Khoury said.

On March 1, Amy Rakestraw will discuss the many options for color and texture in “Container Gardening.” Leading the session for “How to Become a Master Gardener” on March 8 will be Ken Creel and Alice Lawler.

Creel works as regional extension agent for Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

On March 15, Madison resident and Master Gardener Melissa Kirkindall will explain “Landscaping to Attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies.” Melissa and her husband Sandy have set up feeders, annual flowers and flowering shrubs that attract hundreds of hummingbirds each summer evening.

“The public is invited. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch and enjoy the learning,” Khoury said.

Online registration is required at mginfo.org. Individuals who don’t have Internet access can call 256-430-0555 or email workshopregistrar@mginfo.org.
