Turbiner dedicates service in U.S. Navy

Veteran of the Week

MADISON – In June 2003, Scott Turbiner enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Currently, he serves as Petty Officer First Class (undisclosed specialty) in the U.S. Navy, Reserve Component.

For Basic Training, he reported to Great Lakes, Ill. For two-plus years, he served at Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) in Bessemer. “I was recalled to active duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from July 2006 to February 2007,” Turbiner said.

He returned to NOSC in Bessemer before reporting to Naval Air Station (NAS) Atlanta. Turbiner then served at the Navy Reserve, Office of Navy Intelligence from 2008 to 2013 at Redstone Arsenal.

His next assignment was Navy Reserve European Command at Joint Analysis Center in Forest Park, Ga.

For Annual Training, Turbiner reported to Georgia, Louisiana, Virginia, Illinois, Texas and California; National Maritime Intelligence Center, Washington D.C.; Missile and Space Intelligence Center, Redstone Arsenal; Naval War College, Newport, R.I.; and USS Saipan, Norfolk, Va. and USS Constitution, Charlestown, Mass.

During his career, Turbiner has served in the ranks of Electronic Technician Petty Officer Third Class and then was promoted to Second Class and eventually First Class.

His decorations and awards have included Joint Unit Meritorious Award and Navy Good Conduct Medal, 2016; Reserve Sailor of the Quarter and also Reserve Sailor of the Year (NR EUCOM), 2014; and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, 2011.

Earlier, he received Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, 2006, 2009 and 2012; National Defense Service Medal, Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, 2007; and letters of appreciation from commanding officers.

The Turbiner family moved to Madison in 2004 when The Boeing Company hired him. He now works as a systems engineer for Camber Corporation. His wife Karen and he have one child, Morgan.

At the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

He frequently volunteers with Temple B’nai Sholom in Huntsville and belongs to American Legion and FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association. In his free time, Turbiner likes to spend time with family, using computers, reading, sports and volunteering.
