MADISON COUNTY – On April 23 and 30, Heart of the Valley YMCA will host free community events in Huntsville and Madison for the 25th annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day.

This national initiative intends to inspire more children to keep their minds and bodies active to improve health and well-being, especially during summer.

On April 23, Southeast Family YMCA, 1000 Weatherly Road SW in Huntsville, will offer a one-mile fun run and obstacle course. From 9 a.m. to noon, visitors can enjoy a Kids ZUMBA class, kid-friendly vendors, food sampling and make-and-take crafts.

On April 30, Hogan Family YMCA, 130 Park Square Lane in Madison, also will feature a ZUMBA class and vendors with kids’ merchandise from 9 a.m. to noon. The Madison site will have bounce houses, smoothie sampling and a demonstration by search-and-rescue dogs.

In addition in Madison, HEMSI will attend to show their lifesaving equipment, and Madison Fire and Rescue Department employees will sponsor a child identification program. Parents can pick up handouts about summer learning options.

“The Y believes in the potential of all children, and we strive to help kids find the ‘Wow! factor’ inside themselves,” Heart of the Valley YMCA President Jerry Courtney said. “A child’s development is never on vacation, and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to educate families and motivate kids to stay active in spirit, mind and body throughout the summer.”

In celebration of Healthy Kids Day, the YMCA has several tips for children to develop healthy habits:

• Eat at least five servings daily of fruits and vegetables.

• Read to and with your children.

• Team up as a family for community races, walks and bike rides.

• Volunteer together.

• Make sleep a priority — 10-12 hours for children and 7-8 hours for adults.

This year, the YMCA will offer membership incentives to encourage families to join, commit to an active summer together and receive discounts on summer camps, swim lessons and programs.
