MADISON – Madison Senior Center has some slots open that not only will help the center members but give a fulfilling reward to the volunteers.

“We need volunteers to help serve meals in our center kitchen,” center director Vickie Parker said. “We have a lost a few volunteers due to various reasons and need some people to take their place.”

Individuals who decide to volunteer will arrive at the center on their assigned day at 10:45 a.m. They will assist with packaging the meals that are delivered to the center’s homebound clients. Then, the volunteers will serve lunch to the clients that attend the center.

Volunteers can expect to finish their duties by noon.

“There is no cooking done at our center,” Parker said. “The food is actually prepared at a commissary in Russellville and delivered to our center.”

“We need volunteers who are willing to work on an assigned day, as well as back up volunteers who are willing to substitute on days that scheduled volunteers are unavailable,” Parker said.

Madison Senior Center serves approximately 70 lunches each day, including those meals to homebound clients that are unable to attend the center.

Lunchtime is very popular with the center’s members. “Hot dogs, hamburgers and taco salad are definitely the favorite lunch items that we serve at our center,” Parker said. “We do not charge for our lunches, but we do ask for a donation to defray the cost of the meals.”

Individuals who want to volunteer can contact LaWanda Mason, who serves as nutritionist for the center. Call Mason at 256-772-6242 or e-mail lawanda.mason@madisonal.gov.

Madison Senior Center offers daily fellowship, educational programs and recreational activities for senior adults who are at least 60 years old. Transportation is available to senior citizens who live in the city limits of Madison.

Madison Senior Center’s address is 1282 Hughes Road. For more information, call 256-772-6258, fax 256-464-8435 or visit www.madisonal.gov and click “Departments” and “Parks and Recreation.”
