MADISON- Bob Jones basketball coach Luther Tiggs led about 30 kids through drills and games as he conducted the annual Bob Jones basketball camp. The camp started May 31 and concludes June 2. It was for boys below high school.

Tiggs has conducted many camps during his 16 years as head coach but this was his first as Bob Jones head basketball coach.

The camp is one of the most popular for campers because it is inside the air-conditioned main gym at Bob Jones.

Taylor Shields, a Bob Jones graduate now at University of West Alabama handled the administrative details for the camp. Current Bob Jones players also assisted.

“It’s great to see the little kids come out and enjoy an activity like basketball. It’s been a good week,” Tiggs said Wednesday during a break. “We encourage players on the high school team to get engaged to give something back. These kids were where they were at one time. These kids look upon them like a Steph Curry.” Tiggs said referring to the current two-time NBA MVP .

“We really teach some basketball. In the early morning sessions we work on ball handling, then passing and receiving, and 20 minutes on showing them the proper technique of shooting. They like the drills but they love to play.”

Players divided up by size and donned overlay blue and gold jersey tops. Two cross court games are played in the final hour of camp which ran from 9 to 12 Tuesday through Thursday.

Tiggs calls it homework basketball. He stresses to campers to go home and practice what they learned at camp.

“Teaching never stops. They can take what they learn here into the gyms where they play and become a little better player.”

“We emphasize teamwork, sharing the basketball, and everybody gets a shot. We made sure all the boys at our feeder schools had a flyer about the camp.”

James Clemens held their basketball camp the same week as Bob Jones. Next up at Bob Jones is girls basketball camp and softball camp both next week June 6-8.
