MADISON – Councilman Steve Smith has announced that he will seek a second term to represent District 2 on Madison City Council.

“Although the current council accomplished quite a bit, I would like the opportunity to return in order to complete some unfinished business for our city,” Smith said.

Smith is proud of the accomplishments during his first term in office, such as “investing nearly $20 million in road improvements, improving greenways, updating city policies, helping the city become easier to do business with, increasing revenue, reducing cost and revitalizing downtown Madison.”

“I am most proud of the financial progress the city has seen over the past four years, while serving on the finance committee — with the last two years as finance chair,” Smith said. “The city, for the first time, has money dedicated to capital purchases, neighborhood repaving and road maintenance.”

“The gains in tax revenue our city has experienced have not been lost in the general fund. We made it a priority to put this money to work where it’s most needed and that is giving our employees the tools needed to do their jobs and addressing our infrastructure,” Smith said.

“By earmarking certain monies, the city has been able to pay off all short-term debt and now has the means to pay cash for police vehicles, fire trucks, service trucks and other equipment,” Smith said. “The city has obtained the highest financial ratings a city our size can have.”

“So what’s left to be done? I believe there are some areas that will be unfinished by the time our current term is up,” Smith said. He cited the school tax issue with Limestone County, western growth plan and more regulatory updates to confirm long-term financial stability.

He and wife Mickie have two sons. A Bob Jones High School graduate, Spencer will graduate from the University of Alabama with a degree in special education in 2017. Chandler, who graduated from James Clemens High School, is a nursing major at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and member of the track and field team.
