MADISON COUNTY – The Salvation Army of Huntsville/Madison County has deployed its Disaster Canteen, a case worker and volunteers to assist flood relief efforts in Baton Rouge, La.

The group left from headquarters at 2114 Oakwood Ave. in Huntsville on Aug. 17.

Currently, Salvation Army’s Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi divisions have requested only financial donations for Baton Rouge. Official may issue appeals later for donations of food, clothing, water and other material items, spokesperson Pamela Donald said.

Canteen crews already in the area had served 3,171 prepared meals, 2,586 drinks and 532 snacks.

“To help those in these flooded areas across Southeast Louisiana, you can donate by going to give.salvationarmyusa.org/gulf_coast_floods,” Donald said. This website also provides information about donating by phone and mail.

“You can also text STORM to 51555 on your mobile device. Financial contributions will be accepted or can be mailed to The Salvation Army of Huntsville Madison County, 2114 Oakwood Ave., Huntsville, AL 35810,” Donald said.

“All monetary gifts designated for flood victims will be forwarded directly to our divisional office and be used for the purpose designated by the donor,” Donald  said.

Currently, flood waters are still too high to get feeding trucks into the communities so the focus is on the shelters open across Baton Rouge. “In times of disaster, the Salvation Army red shield is a beacon of compassion to those in need during a disaster. We offer physical, psychological and spiritual counsel.”

Salvation Army worked to serve hot meals and refreshments to residents that have suffered extensive damage. Those efforts will continue to serve those in need of a meal, water and supplies. But especially words of encouragement and ministerial support, Donald said.

“We appreciate the Huntsville/Madison County community’s support as we help those in need,” she said.

Founded 60 years ago, the Salvation Army of Greater Huntsville is prepared to meet community needs by providing relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled and outreach to the elderly and opportunities for underprivileged children.
