MADISON – Rocket Republic Brewing Company and Madison Public Library have teamed up to bring an old-school favorite with a twist … a spelling bee for grown-ups.
Festivities for the “Adult Spelling Bee” at Rocket Republic at 289 Production Ave. in Madison will run from 3 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 20. Madison Public Library will benefit from the bee’s proceeds … “just for the ‘spell’ of it!” adult services librarian Anne Wood said.
“Madison Public Library is getting a new building, and we need some money to make that happen,” Wood said. “And because what’s more fun(ny) than watching grown-ups attempt to spell words after a few brews?”
The winner will walk away with bragging rights and a $100 gift card to Rocket Republic, swag bag from the library and more gifts.
If spelling isn’t a natural talent, “you can still come watch, enjoy food from a local food truck and participate in a silent auction with proceeds going to Friends of the Madison Public Library,” Wood said. Also, guests can meet local authors Judd Vowell and Mike Guillebeau who will sign and sell their books.
The silent auction will open at 4 p.m., and winners will be announced after the bee. The BookMobile will be on site from 5 to 7 p.m. so guests can check out materials or get a library card. The food truck will arrive at 5 p.m.
The spelling bee will start at 7 p.m. Anyone at least 21 years old can enter. Every entrant will receive an individual word to spell, selected randomly from audience submissions and a standard Oxford English Dictionary.
The speller has two options:
* Attempt to spell the word immediately.
* Purchase a lifeline before attempting to spell the word. Lifelines include: Using the word in a sentence (free); definition ($1); or ‘Phone a Friend” by asking an audience member to spell the word ($5).
Spellers can swap the word by paying $10. After being eliminated, a player can ‘buy back’ into the bee for $25.
“The library is so grateful to have the support of Rocket Republic. Without the space they’re providing, we wouldn’t be able to have this fun event,” Wood said.
