MADISON – Shopping for bargains on handmade merchandise translates to help for Honduran students, thanks to the Handmade Market at Messiah Lutheran Church.
Messiah Lutheran at 7240 U.S. 72 in Madison will present their seventh annual Handmade Market on Oct. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Event proceeds will help support Bonito Montoya School in El Barial, Honduras with the “Lunches for Learning” program.
“Throughout the year, crafters of all kinds make and donate items to the sale. Items range from jewelry to hand-knitted apparel and accessories, as well as jams and jellies,” church spokesperson Meredith Kilby said.
“The items are available just in time to get some early holiday shopping done,” Kilby said. Other goods at the Handmade Market will include artwork, seasonal decor, Christmas ornaments, baby blankets and soft toys.
Based in Alabama, the Lunches for Learning program provides food resources to 29 disadvantaged or remote elementary schools that serve approximately 1,700 lunch meals daily. Lunches for Learning exists to break the poverty cycle in rural Honduras by providing a healthy lunch to elementary school children every school day, allowing these children to stay in school and complete at least sixth grade.
Earlier this year, Messiah Lutheran raised enough funds to pay for construction of an onsite kitchen at Benito Montoya School for its approximately 60 students.
On July 6, Rev. Scott Peterson from Messiah Lutheran and Rudy Lind, a director for Lunches For Learning, participated in the dedication. The event included a blessing ceremony, ribbon cutting and lunch held with students, teachers and school families.
“The end of the school year is in November for Benito Montoya. It is becoming a tradition that at least one of our church members attends the graduation ceremony. This year, member Chris Berry will make the trek during the middle of November,” Kilby said.
Shoppers can preview Handmade Market’s merchandise on the Pinterest sale page. For more information, visit mlutheran.org or lunchesforlearning.org.
