MADISON – Math students at Bob Jones High School ranked at seventh place in the nation during competition in the Fall Startup Event.
In addition, Bob Jones tallied the highest score of any team from Alabama.
“We also had five students place nationally on this challenging test,” sponsor Kimberly Cox said. “In their grade levels, here are the national rankings: Joey Li, second; Tony Tian, seventh; Aditi Limaye, 12th; Winston Van, 16th; and Shantanu Kadam, 20th.
All participants take the same test, regardless of grade. The individual score indicates the number of correctly answered problems from a possible 100 questions in 30 minutes. The team score is the total of the four highest individual scores from the team.
The Fall Startup Event is the first of four national mathematics contests that National Assessment & Testing administers annually.
Contest director Tom Clymer, who is Director of Academic Competitions with National Assessment & Testing, notified Cox and Bob Jones Principal Sylvia Lambert about Bob Jones’ fine showing.
Clymer compared students in the competition to a musician practicing scales. “Many skills can become almost instinctual. With so many questions and so little time, competitors must not only have strong mathematical skills but quickly decide which problems to solve and which to skip.”
