Students earn top-place Reflections honors

These Madison students in grade 6-12 were recognized for their award-winning Reflections submissions at a recent meeting of Madison Board of Education. CONTRIBUTED

MADISON – The paint brushes, pencils and paper, musical notes and ballet shoes now are at rest with the conclusion of the annual Reflections fine arts contest.

The contest is affiliated with the national PTA Reflections campaign. Locally, Madison City Council of PTAs sponsors Reflections for all students in elementary, middle and high schools.

Students submitted entries in categories of Visual Arts, Literature, Film Production, Dance Choreography, Music Composition and Photography that used the 2017 theme, “What’s Your Story.”

Madison Board of Education honored the Reflections winners at a recent meeting.

The following students earned first-place ratings by a panel of judges:

* Bob Jones High School — Brenna Kilpatrick, Visual Arts, “Windows”; Gloria Trapane, Dance Choreography, “My True Colors”; Meenu Bhooshanan, Literature, “Summer Sojourn”

* Columbia Elementary School — Kaitlyn Hockey, Film Production, “My Special Life”; Pranaav Satheesh, Musical Composition, “Musical River”; Isabelle Park, Visual Arts, “A Dream Tree”; Susie Sorensen, Literature, “Claire and the Contest”; Anthony Lee, Literature, “Cotton Candy Like Days”

* Discovery Middle School — Emma Teng, Literature, “Story of the Wind”; Avery Adams, Film Production, “Portrait Through the Years”

* Heritage Elementary School — Kate Miller, Visual Arts, “Mom Shaved My Hair”; Oviya Gowder, Dance Choreography, “Dancing With My Star”; Laya Gowder, Dance Choreography, “A Few of My Favorite Things”

* Horizon Elementary School — Henry Zomkowski, Photography, “The Car I Built”

* James Clemens High School — Cole Whitlow, Photography, “Invincible”

* Liberty Middle School — Anna Hill, Photography, “Beautiful Ballet”; Lizzy Voeten, Visual Arts, “Sweet Dreams”

* Madison Elementary School — Emma Kate Lindsey, Musical Composition, “Roller Coaster”; Madelyn Pannell, Film Production, “The 7-Year-Old Spy”; Hannah Beavers, Photography, “New Life of Spring”

* Mill Creek Elementary School — Mila Chalmers, Visual Arts, “Blue Bird in the Blue Field”

* Rainbow Elementary School — Edison Yang, Musical Composition, “Walking in the Leaves”  

Madison City Council of PTA selected judges. First-place winners will advance to compete at the state level.
