Madison City Farmers Market opens April 8

MADISON – On the 2017 season’s opening day on April 8, Madison City Farmers Market will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in business.

Farmers, vendors and craftsmen will return for the popular market on the campus of Trinity Baptist Church, 1088 Hughes Road. The market will open at 8 a.m. and close at noon.

A non-profit organization, Madison City Farmers Market is “a truly local farmers market Alabama offering products that are grown or made in the Tennessee Valley. Everything sold at the market is grown or made by members of the market within 100 miles of Madison,” chairperson Mary Stallings said.

Volunteers run the producer-only market, while local farmers, artisans and consumers form its governing body.

The market “provides consumers with a choice of fresh, quality produce, food products, handcrafted items and other services,” Stallings said. In addition, the market provides a venue for local farmers, growers and artisans to promote their products within the Madison community.

The market also provides an experience that encourages community spirit and keeps money and energy within Madison.

Shoppers can browse fresh local vegetables, meats, roasted coffee, baked goods and much more. Healthy spring flowers will be available with many varieties, including impatiens, petunias, geraniums, marigolds, coleus and begonias.

For entertainment, Bob Kircus will perform.

“The market changes from season to season and will expand and contract to allow all that is fresh, local and plentiful from our farmers,” Stallings said. “Meats, eggs, cheeses, milk, honey, baked goods and local crafts are available from spring to fall, but the seasons bring exciting changes and variety each month.”

In spring, the market “explodes with fresh strawberries, tender greens, herbs and bedding plants. Summer brings bountiful supplies of tomatoes, berries, peaches, corn, summer squash and watermelons. Transitioning into fall, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, winter squash and pumpkins abound,” Stallings said.

The market’s board members are chairperson Mary Stallings, webmaster Kevin Stallings, Dale Rohe, Tammy Rohe, Clinton Wann and Jason Martin.
