Col. Valentin offers career advice at James Clemens

MADISON – Col. Jose Valentin, deputy commander of the U.S. Army 2nd Recruiting Brigade, visited James Clemens High School on March 29.

Valentin was the second visitor in the James Clemens Speaker Series, which involves a set of guests who are sharing with students about career opportunities in the military and the importance of leadership, character and a good work ethic.

The speakers’ sessions “are timely with graduation around the corner. Many students are still contemplating life after high school,” John S. Peck said. Peck is Public Relations Manager for Madison City Schools.

Valentin met with students during the popular Refuel Hour at James Clemens.

Valentin represented “the plethora of jobs and careers that the United States military can offer to many students. Valentin is based out of Redstone Arsenal,” according to a press release.

During his time speaking with students, Valentin discussed the importance of exhibiting a solid work ethic, commitment and dedication. He also explained the facts that he has learned about leadership and the qualities of being an effective and respectable leader.

“A good leader understands that, if you expect your subordinates to be loyal, you must be loyal to your subordinates,” Valentin said in summarizing his outlook.

The goal of the James Clemens Speaker Series is to increase students’ exposure to various career fields in North Alabama and nationally. The sessions highlight individuals who have generated success on their own terms in their career, along with allowing students to expand their knowledge of opportunities after high school.

Laura Smith, Media Specialist at James Clemens, and Kristina Hansard, Career Coach for Madison City Schools, help in coordinating the speaker session.
