Annuals, perennials ready for Garden Club’s Plant Sale

MADISON – Madison Garden Club will present its annual plant sale on April 29.

The sale will be open from 8 a.m. to noon at 100 Bluebelle Drive, which is off Sullivan Street near the intersection with Browns Ferry Road. Shoppers will find ample parking space and easy access to the sale site.

This year, members of Madison Garden Club are celebrating the 55th anniversary of the organization.

Numerous types of perennial and annual plants will be available. Shoppers will find daylilies, hostas, tomatoes, wildflowers, herbs and shade plants. Members also will have a miniature flea market onsite.

“The plants in the sale are ones that have done well in our club members’ yards,” club publicist Suzanne Kirkhuff said. “The plants are from mature stock that have thrived in our hot summers and clay soil and should thrive well in local gardens.”

In added benefit to shoppers, “the sale is staffed by the very gardeners who donated the plants, and the buyer can hear first-hand planting tips and instructions,” Kirkhuff said.

Most members of Madison Garden Club have studied to reach the status of Master Gardener. “We will also have on-hand Master Gardeners to answer gardening questions with the ‘Ask a Master Gardener’ spot,” Kirkhuff said.

Club members will use sale proceeds to fund the club’s projects throughout the year.

Their service projects include planting and maintenance of flowering bulbs and vines, shrubbery and statuary in the front entrance garden at Madison Public Library. The club also plants flowers and maintains small shrubs in pots downtown on Main Street.

In addition, Madison Garden Club members decorate City Hall for Christmas and fund the “Every Light a Prayer for Peace” program, which culminates with awards to several fifth-graders from Madison schools for their essay, “What Peace Means to Me.”
