Liberty lauds Adams as Teacher of the Year

MADISON – Her colleagues at Liberty Middle School have elected Leigh Adams as Teacher of the Year.

Adams has taught at Liberty for 19 years. Previously, she taught math and biology for Calhoun Community College, basic math for military personnel globally and other venues.

At Liberty, Adams sponsors Science Olympiad. She has served as a trainer with Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative and mentors new teachers and those pursuing National Board Certification.

“I believe all students can be successful even if all A’s are not achieved. Middle school is a tough time with huge adjustments and changes,” Adams said.

“Showing students their own value and helping them see the value in other people is a great undertaking. I love to see shy, anxious and worried seventh-graders bloom into confident and outgoing young people,” Adams said.

As a science teacher, she strives to spread her love and enthusiasm for the field. “I share the WOW of the amazing world we live in and help my students see relevance of science to their lives,” she said. “I want them to be informed and able to make decisions concerning environmental, health and other issues. After all, they will be determining the future.”

At Auburn University, Adams earned a bachelor’s degree in microbiology. She completed a master’s degree in biology with secondary education certification at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. In 2007, she earned National Board Certification.

One teacher who greatly influenced her career is Jeanne Welt. “A language arts teacher, she adopted me when I arrived at Liberty, mentoring me as I worked to learn my craft,” Adams said. “I saw the amazing love she had for her students and dedication to being the very best teacher possible.”

Jeanne Welt “was tireless in her efforts to advance education in our system and state, always working to help teachers achieve beyond their expectations. She encouraged me often as a mentor and friend. She was a direct influence in my attaining National Board Certification,” Adams said.

She and husband John moved to Huntsville in 1993 with a military assignment. John works with Defense Acquisition University after retiring from the U.S. Army. Their son Rick, wife Chevonne and children, Bella, 12, and Asher, 4, live in Huntsville. Also a science teacher, daughter Lara, husband Jason and son Kal, 3, live in Woodstock, Ga.

War Eagle fans, Leigh and John cheer at all home games. She enjoys gardening, reading, traveling/exploring and sharing time with family and friends.
